Smarter builds a hospital of the future with the latest Lenovo technology

To enhance connected healthcare services for people in the capital, UK charity Nuffield Health has built a new health and wellbeing campus in London.

Equipped with cutting-edge medical equipment and the latest Lenovo endpoint devices, Nuffield Health at St Bartholomew’s Hospital will combine excellent facilities with data-driven care services, contributing to higher-quality patient experiences.

Nuffield Health is the UK’s largest healthcare charity, providing health and wellbeing services for more than 60 years. Nuffield Health believes that looking after body and mind is vital to enable preventative care. As a result, its connected care offering spans a range of services—from personal training, health assessments, GP services, and physiotherapy to mental health support and hospital treatments. Through its network of award-winning hospitals, fitness and wellbeing centers, healthcare clinics, and workplace wellbeing services, Nuffield Health is helping to build a healthier nation.

Transforming healthcare services in the city
As a charity, Nuffield Health invests all its income back into healthcare services for communities to make the UK fitter, healthier, happier, and stronger. To improve its healthcare services in the capital, Nuffield Health has built a new health and wellbeing campus including the City of London’s first independent hospital.

Nuffield Health at St Bartholomew’s Hospital joins a wide estate of Nuffield Health facilities in London, including medical centers and fitness & wellbeing centers, providing connected health and wellbeing services from diagnosis through to treatment and recovery. Nuffield Health at St Barts will deliver outstanding care for patients across London and South East England.

Karl de Bruijn, Chief Technology Officer of Nuffield Health, explained the crucial connection created by technology in their facilities: “By connecting up with our existing fitness and wellbeing centers, and the numerous workplace wellbeing facilities we run in London, we can provide more people with consistently excellent, personalized care in a modern setting.”

To provide the best care for patients, staff depend on rapid, reliable access to information, including electronic health records (EHR) in clinical IT systems and appointment information in backoffice applications.

“IT is becoming ever more critical in healthcare,” says Dan Morgan, Technology Operations Director at Nuffield Health. “From MRI and CT scanners to workstations, our healthcare teams rely on digital capabilities to offer outstanding patient experiences.”

Investing in the latest technology
Nuffield Health engaged Lenovo to equip the new hospital with desktops, laptops, and monitors for use in both clinical and backoffice settings.

Lenovo is Nuffield Health’s largest supplier for technology solutions, delivered via Tangible Benefit—a Lenovo Platinum Partner. The charity has worked with Lenovo and Tangible Benefit for several years, and today there are more than 8,000 Lenovo endpoint devices across Nuffield Health’s 150 sites.

“We’ve always been delighted with the build quality and durability of the Lenovo endpoint devices,” says Dan Morgan. “Lenovo solutions have proven to be extremely reliable over the years. So although Nuffield Health at St Bartholomew’s Hospital is a new flagship site, getting it set up with Lenovo infrastructure is almost business as usual. We will implement a suite of Lenovo ThinkCentre desktops, ThinkPad notebooks, and ThinkVision monitors—the latest generation of tried-and-tested technology we know we can rely on to help our clinicians deliver excellent patient care.”

Nuffield Health is working closely with Tangible Benefit to implement Lenovo ThinkCentre M Series Tiny desktops, Lenovo ThinkPad X Series and T Series notebooks, and Lenovo ThinkVision T Series monitors at the new hospital before it opens to the public. The endpoint devices will be mounted in carts, cases, arms, and stands to create clean, efficient workspaces for every department, giving staff quick, secure access to patient data and clinical systems.

Lenovo will provide 3-Year On-Site Warranty Services for the new hospital, which will help to ensure that patient care services run smoothly.

Helping people live happier, healthier lives
Supported by cutting-edge technology, Nuffield Health at St Bartholomew’s Hospital will give patients access to some of the most experienced and skilled medical consultants in the world in comfortable, welcoming surroundings.

As it continues to roll out Lenovo technology across the new hospital, Nuffield Health is already exploring how it can further enhance patient care using technology. For example, the charity is planning to introduce tablets to make access to EHR and clinical systems even more convenient.

“Lenovo has the technology we need to make our healthcare vision a reality,” says Dan Morgan. “We like the focus on mobility within Lenovo’s portfolio, which will enable us to deliver EHR to doctors and nurses on the move.”

Looking further ahead, Nuffield Health plans to build on these foundations with additional digital services, harnessing data to build a 360-degree view of each patient’s health.
