The manufacturing industry, like everything else, is always evolving. New developments, such as AI, robotics, automations, IT/OT integrations, and data intelligence inevitably impact the way things are done.

Lenovo’s Smart Manufacturing brings your business up to speed and beyond. Through solutions in smart warehouse and intelligent shopfloor, and many more, we start with your vision to determine your unique solution roadmap which drives a full-scale implementation.

The Industry 4.0 Warehouse

Warehouse operations have never been so advanced with Lenovo. Among our sweepingly comprehensive range of Industry 4.0 technologies is a Warehouse Execution System that provides a unified data and command gateway, between a management and control system, so operations achieve maximum productivity.

Warehouse Execution System (WES)

One unified data and command gateway between management and control system. It offers real-time reporting of errors and exceptions, ensuring uninterrupted operation and running efficiency for different robots or automated equipment.

Automated Storage & Retrieval System

With cutting-edge technology, the system offers high density, flexibility and scalability in warehouse operation.  It uses advanced AI algorithms to manage the pallet shuttle automatically and control inbound and outbound pallet transfers without the need for user interference.

Pick Assist AMR

Utilize the most advanced “order-to-person” collaborative mode and eliminate the need for manual route planning, warehouse redesign, or human intervention. This service offers maximum convenience, significant cost advantages, and unparalleled flexibility.

Lenovo Robotic Inspection

Benefit from round-the-clock alarm responses, streamlined asset upkeep, and simplified documentation. The ruggedized Lenovo Daystar robot utilizes autonomous navigation and advanced algorithms, conducting mission critical inspections under complex environmental conditions.

The Industry 4.0 Shopfloor

Lenovo’s intelligent shopfloor fuses the most advanced Industry 4.0 technologies into a whole to deliver shopfloor operational excellence. From edge cloud collaboration to robotic inspections and industrial AR management can make truly informed factory floor decisions.

Turning manufacturing green

As part of the planning process, Lenovo’s factory in Tianjin is being designed to become Lenovo’s first carbon neutral Smart Manufacturing Exhibition Center. The goal is twofold: successfully applying our smart manufacturing solutions and making it greener. The manufacturing functions showcase our intelligent manufacturing capabilities: a solar power system runs the factory with renewable energy; lower carbon alternatives are used throughout construction, manufacturing, and logistics operations.

FAQs

How can AI be applied in manufacturing?

AI can be applied in many aspects of manufacturing: quality inspection, equipment monitoring and maintenance, security and safety monitoring, predictive maintenance, production planning, and production incident management.

Is ESG important in manufacturing?

ESG is no longer just about being socially responsible or reducing costs. When prioritized, it also helps to ensure worker safety and well-being, and longer term to increase competitiveness. The growing pressure of regulatory compliance is adding urgency to the need for an ESG strategy. And any ESG practices should also now extend across the entire supply chain.

What is Lenovo’s smart manufacturing initiative?

Like any manufacturing company, Lenovo continually strives to improve quality, increase efficiency, and reduce costs. Our smart manufacturing strategy is based on the 4 goals of intelligent decision, high quality products, precision delivery, and personalized customization ─ and executed through 18 key capabilities.

The initiative enabled us to launch our first smart factory in Shenzhen in 2022, followed by a zero-carbon factory in Tianjin in 2023. Several technologies were leveraged, including AI, robotic automation, digital twin, blockchain, IOT, and edge. Our smart manufacturing scope now extends beyond manufacturing to cover the entire supply chain. As a result of this, we were ranked #8 in Gartner’s Supply Chain Top 25 in 2023.

How do you measure the ROI of the smart manufacturing initiative and what matrices are used to measure its success?

The success of smart manufacturing is measured against the 4 goals set out for the initiative. In general, our KPIs haven’t changed, e.g. quality, cost, and efficiency, but they needed to be more quantifiable. Because investments in smart manufacturing should far exceed the returns from traditional automation.

Can you share any insights on how smart manufacturing is transforming supply chain management?

Supply chain is now an integral extension of manufacturing. It impacts cost, efficiency, and quality. With the increasing pressure to respond to the fast-changing direction of businesses, greater visibility, management and control over every aspect of the supply chain will be crucial to ensuring goals are met. Direct integration between supply chain systems and OT systems, as well as the merging of data from both sources, will be needed to empower decision making. Complete real-time visibility of every part of the supply chain is no longer a luxury, it’s a necessity.
