Improve Processing, Graphics and Storage for Live Streaming

Media companies continue to tinker with how to extract the most value out of live streaming, including true demand-based pricing, subscription versus advertising, targeted advertising, and content strategies that target mobile devices. Perhaps it’s most important to deliver a quality experience, otherwise up to 62% of viewers are likely to view your brand negatively.

4 Considerations for Live Streaming

While network and storage infrastructure play a large part in live streaming video, the responsiveness of endpoint PCs may determine the success or failure of a live broadcast. Lenovo recommends that media and entertainment organizations ranging in size from the solo professional Twitch streamer to mid-sized production companies take the following factors under consideration for live streaming PCs:

  • Processing headroom: Software that encodes 4K footage for streaming requires multiple cores to run smoothly, especially when encoding for mobile device viewing. ISV-certified workstations such as the ThinkStation P Series include dual Intel® Xeon® processors and the large amounts of memory that users need to run live production or conduct multi-stream advanced video coding (AVC).
  • Real-time graphics: Live streamers who need to incorporate real-time graphics must consider hardware and software implications. PCs need high-end graphics cards as well as the power to render graphics for live sporting and other events. Applications such as Brainstorm eStudio recommend, at minimum, a 6-core Intel Xeon processor and NVIDIA® Quadro M2000 graphics card.
  • Storage: 4K video can display 64x the number of colors and supports native playback at twice the maximum rate of HD video. Lenovo recommends loading the OS and encoding application on an M.2 PCIe solid-state drive (SSD) for optimal performance.
  • Productivity: While it’s important for PCs to have the processing headroom to allow for multi-tasking, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations provides even more productivity features. It supports devices with persistent or non-volatile memory so you can speed through advanced workloads with the fastest data storage possible on workstations. It also saves valuable time on file transfers between server and PC with SMB Direct*, a Microsoft solution for network adapters with Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) capability.
*SMB Direct requires RDMA capable network adapters on both endpoints of the connetion: client/device and server.
Improve Processing, Graphics and Storage for Live Streaming

4G brought a huge increase in the viewing, streaming and sharing of videos on mobile devices. 5G will enable us to go even further and open up a new range of possibilities.

  • For live streaming, PCs need high-end graphics cards as well as the power to render graphics. Lenovo's workstations can be configured and scaled to support live streaming or broadcast. Their unique design and Tri-Channel cooling improves reliability and makes more configuration options possible.
