Going circular is the smarter way forward

Being eco-friendly is not a short-term thing. It is a life choice, covering the whole lifecycle of the products we use. We need to create a circular economy where nothing is wasted. The old linear way, of taking raw materials and making products from them that have a relatively short lifespan and are discarded once finished, is no longer an option.

We need to handle resources in a more responsible and efficient way. By creating a circular economy, products will not only last longer, they can also be recirculated and recycled at end-of-life.

The digital way forward

It’s a smarter way forward, made possible by digital technologies, as the EU commission point out in their 2030 Digital Compass.

To make the transition to more sustainable, business requires smarter management of product-related data across the product lifecycle, they believe. That is possible using digital technologies to tag and trace products and share data. This will enable greener solutions and is the idea behind the creation of a European Digital Product Passport, which will give businesses and consumers the information they need to make the most resource-efficient and sustainable choices.

Good for the environment, good for us all

While digital technologies make it simpler and quicker to repair, reuse, remanufacture and recycle products they pay off in other ways. Green initiatives offer new and innovative business opportunities around innovative environmental services. They also cut costs. Eco-friendly innovation and design, leading to less waste and more efficient use of raw materials, is estimated by the EU to bring €600 billion savings to European businesses2.

The circle of life

To help your transition to a circular economy we design our products to maximise their value throughout their lifetime and keep as much as possible out of land-fill sites.

You benefit in meeting your ESG targets in three ways:

  1. Responsible sourcing

Fewer raw materials are used and environmental protection is a key value in selecting key components.

80% of the water used to make Intel® Evo™ vPro® chips, which power the Lenovo ThinkPad, is recycled.

  1. Longer lifetime of products and components

This is made possible by making it easier to repair rather than discard products. We now have replacement parts for products for at least five years. And where we can we repair parts returned to our repair center.

76% of returned PC parts recycled and repaired by 2025.

  1. Eco-friendly disposal

Our product takeback programs (PTBs) make it easier for you to recycle old devices, batteries and packaging.

£800 million of end-of-life products reused and recyclyed by 2025
